Gargoyle's Quest II (NES)
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:28:29 pm »
Here are the links to all the maps for discussion. I hope I've done them good enough. After all, this is my first complete game maps submission. Other than the other few maps I've submitted. I've actually done several other incomplete maps for other games but I just did those for my own sake. Comments are welcome. I hope these maps will help when those playing need a handy dandy map.

Good work. I'm glad you decided to label them and you put the labels over the objects instead of using symbols and cramming the text into a corner. A couple minor things:

The little arrows on the labels for the overworld map aren't necessary. If the label is cleverly placed it doesn't need lines or arrows. If you are concerned about obscuring features underneath the label, make the background part of the label semitransparent.

Maybe just my eye, but it seems your font size varies a little.

You put your boilerplate (name, title screen) on some maps but not others. Maybe you were going to merge the small ones?

Now *this* is very impressive work! Reminds me how much I enjoyed playing that game so many years ago.

Technically, your maps all look very good. I love the font you're using for tips and such, because it fits well with the game's graphics despite not being an NES font.

I can't say I'm a fan of arrows, lines, circles and indications that are pasted on the actual maps, but I recognize that it's a choice a mapper has to make. As it is, it still looks very good; a bit distracting and annoying to me because of the above, but more helpful to players as well.

I haven't taken a close look to all the maps (there are too many), but I've noticed what appears to be a tiny cut and paste error in map 19, Mount Imaus, in the middle at the top. The topmost skull on the right has a thin brown line next to it that doesn't belong there. Also in map 28, Breager Palace 1, in the boss room, there's a beam and a spiral of some sorts that might or might not be there intentionally, since there are no enemy sprites anywhere else.

Anyway, those are my comments so far. Hope you keep putting out maps of this quality :)

@dammit

Thanks for the comments. I may remove the arrows and/or lines. I'm still trying to get the hang of nice formating and clarity. ALL of the maps are arranged in a 16x16 grid so it's very easy to stamp those 16x16 tiles to edit the maps. I also understand that arrows and lines obscure things but some folks viewing the map in aid may need to know what's what. It does kinda look messy too if not strategically placed. :)

I did use different font sizes, bigger font size for main characters and location names so they stand out. My boilerplate? That's what we call them? I omitted some in some of the smaller maps. I just notice 5 now. Only one of them could be merged, the others are independent.

@Terra

The error in map 19 is fixed locally now. I didn't stamp a clean 16x16 cloud piece with blue. That beam and spiral was intentional as I wanted to add  some still action to the final bosses. Heh. :)

Thanks again for comments, this helps to get better at making maps that folks can understand or not. I never been too good about design and clean layout so I just need some more practice. My next game maps will prolly' be a simpler, shorter game.

I was thinking either Demon's Crest for SNES (Gargoyle's Quest III?..perhaps) or Robin Hood Prince of Thieves for NES. Robin Hood is pretty hard actually I played a bit earlier. Maybe these two would be harder actually. I have noticed several that I'd like to do, a few platformers that only scroll horizontally. Battle of Olympus NES, Journey to Silius or Werewolf - The Last Warrior. Those type games really don't need mapping cause it's not hard to get lost. :)

You may notice for the Breager's Palace part 2 map I added some fancy brick outline to the map to make it look more like a castle. It seems I started geting more ideas for fancy map looks in that map. I guess I can merge the King's Room map with Breager's Palace 02 since that's where you go after the battle with the King.

I like your "fancy"! And don't worry about layout, yours are literally leagues better than mine (seriously, I'm convinced it's scientifically impossible to suck more at layout than me).

I'm trying to think of new fancy designs that may be cool to add. :) Also, I'll add my boilerplate to the un boilerplate maps then add the update after the maps are officially posted.

Sometimes it's hard to conserve file size placing an obscure map on a square image without cleaning it up and adding tile detail to the unused areas of the map.

I actually liked Demon's Crest a lot more than I thought I would.  I always meant to play the Gargoyle's Quest games but hadn't before then.  I would be keen on seeing that game mapped.

Yeah. I've was thinking more toward mapping Demon's Crest. I may play it some before I start mapping it. Those games were among the unsung/unrealized games that are pretty decent. It'd be nice to get my hands on another hard copy of Demon's Crest and the other two GQ games complete in box. Would be hard to find those factory sealed. I used to have  GQII for NES but silly me sold them for gas to make it to work.

I have already used BGMapper to extract the mode7 overworld map. While mapping the game I found a site dedicated to the Red Armerer / Ghost n' Goblins series over at Infinity http://infinity.awardspace.us/ and he will also update his site with my maps. I thought maybe his site was cool enough for some extra content.

Here is another similar site dedicated to the Ghosts n' Goblins series if anyone is interested. http://gngseries.retrogames.com

These maps though, are vgmaps property now and no other site will have them other than infinity. So, hope there is no quarrel about letting Infinity host them?

PS: I've fixed the other map glitches and added the boilerplate to all the maps now. I'll still keep the circles, lines etc on them.

Well, if you make the maps, you can submit them wherever you want.

I did something similar like that vorpal, by sending my POP1 and POP2 maps to popuw.com and we did run into a little hotlink problem taken care of, but up to now, the site seems to be dead. Its been offline for several weeks. Anyway enjoy further mapping of the G&G Fantasies.

Thanks Jon. I was just worried I guess. But anyway. I'm still debating what maps I want to do next. I am confused. :) I notice that CADASH for TG16 isn't here either, and I actually started that games maps. It's not a long game but has some fun adventure rpg elements in it. I've also be working more on level2 Shipwreck for sGnG. Those levels in that game has always ever changing terrain and it's kind of annoying to map them. I almost have all the BG of part2.1 now, and the water level FG and was gonna map the actual ship by itself in a separate layer, then layer over the  mid ground, then the fg.

Hey Will, pop1 and 2, that's Prince of Persia then? that site has no server. Heh. I never got into those two games.
