Somehow I kind of expected that. Kinda sad, I guess, but some animals aren't meant to be pets and it's better for them to be independent. Once it thought it had healed up enough and could fly, it chose to leave. Though certainly it must appreciate what you did for it.
If you believe in any sort of karma, I'm sure that must've counted for something, though knowing that you helped another life must already feel pretty good.
