The mapping of this game is now done and submitted to JonLeung.  I ran it through PNGGauntlet and it reduced it from 2.16 MB to 686 KB for a reduction to 31% of its original size in just over a half an  hour.



Here is the scaled down version of of the map.

The fifth and last clue near the bottom reads as:

BE SWEET AND BE QUICK TO GO BACKWARD



Next to that clue is an object to grab and take back up where the game started.

That map is absolutely insane. I can't see how anyone could make their way through this with hand-drawn maps or with plain ol' memory. Good work KingKuros, you sure did take your punishment in style :)

If my calculations are correct, the game is 66 screens wide and 89 screens tall, which adds to a total of 5874 screens. That's nearly 6.5 times larger than Metroid, and this game clearly uses a larger proportion of its space.



Then again, this game repeats the same 9 screens 4 billion times, thus giving it an unfair advantage. :P

I don't know what you based your calculations on, but here's how I see it.  Each screen, not including the brown border, is 304 x 192.  The play area of the map, again not including the brown border, is 6944 x 9392  So when you divide each dimension of the map by the respective dimension of the screen, it would be about 23 screens wide and about 49 screens tall, for a total of about 1127 screens.

Actually, I mostly agree with RT 55J's measurements, but measuring in "map blocks" instead of screens. You can easily tell that the map is comprised of a small number of different segment repeated over and over all of the place. In fact, many 2D games work like this, namely the Sonic series which are often comprised of 128 x 128 or 256 x 256 blocks.



Anyway, visdually the size of the smallest segment seems to indicate a total of aroung 66 x 89 blocks, give or take a few (it's though to tell at that resolution).

Do these caverns have a name?  Otherwise, I'll just call it "Map".



By the way, you should edit the Quo Vadis Wikipedia entry to include the riddles you found.  Not sure if anyone can still win that gold sceptre, though.

I knew somebody just sent in the first "Q" game, but that wasn't why I mapped this game.  I don't think the caverns are called anything that I know of, so in this case, it's just "Map".  I see a few others like it too.  I didn't write the Wiki entry for this game, but if you click the discussion tab, there is a list of these clues, including the final message.

I didn't see solutions for how the first three are intended to be solved as "honi", "y" and "pense", but that all together becomes

which is explained on Wikipedia as an Anglo-Norman maxim that means,

This is the motto of The Order of the Garter.

Now I've regurgitated what was on that Lemon 64 page and no closer, but I'm curious as to how the first three are solved.

I'm behind on the thumbnails... for the past couple years all I've done are the ones for the Maps Of The Month...
