What's with these bugs?
« on: July 09, 2010, 10:24:12 pm »
I'm currently trying to investigate a mystery, and I figured this would be the place to find people with a greatly varied gaming experience. Do any of you recognize these bugs?

I won't say where I got these models until I learn what game these are from.

Looking at the dragonflies I want to say Breath of Fire 4 but they only use models for bosses, regular enemies are just sprites.

Unless Playstation has specular maps, which the big dragonfly uses, then I doubt it. By all indications this is from a Gamecube/Wii game.

Not having played Body Harvest for the N64, but remembering it vaguely from some old Nintendo Power issue(s), that's a guess of mine.  Probably wrong, though.

When I first saw this topic I thought there were bugs in the forums...  :P

Unless they made a sequel for the Gamecube or Wii, it can't possibly be that.

By the way, here's another one.

There is Escape From Bug Island on the Wii, but after looking at video of the game, I doubt that these came from it. Judging by how simple the geometry is on the models its hard to imagine they come from anything more powerful than the N64. I don't see where the specular mapping comes in on the giant dragonfly, but the system is capable of specular highlights. For some reason they scream Turok to me.

The thing is, with the Nintendo 64, textures can't be over a certain filesize, which is why you get 32x32 color bitmaps and 64x64 grayscale bitmaps. The "specular highlighting" environment maps that the N64 uses is quite different from the specular map I'm referring to. Here are the big big fly's textures to show both points:

So yeah, it can't be from the N64. The quality of the newest larva model can be explained by the fact it was meant to be really small (and in large numbers?).

Well they're certainly not a cute as they could be.  Maybe they're from a darker leaning game?

I've found a website that told where you got those models (don't worry Pear, I won't tell without your okay  ;) )

But I have no idea where's the origin of the those bugs, nor would I expect it from the game you found the models in.

Guess what? There's one last one. This is pretty much the entire set.

So, um...what's the deal with these?  Are we ever going to hear (read) the answer?

Oh, yeah... believe it or not, apparently they WERE meant for Super Mario Galaxy, the game I found the models in. Considering the game contains files from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat as well, I figured this would be a similar case for these bizarre bugs. And then I discovered that the butterfly model used in the game has the same exact style. So despite how weird these things are, they were at some point Mario enemies.
