List of unmapped NES games
« on: December 14, 2024, 10:03:33 pm »
We've been talking about this a lot lately. I wanted to check on it's progress so I made a list by comparing the index of GameFAQs to the index of VGMaps.

First a quick explanation of what this list is all about. This is all the NES games that were sold as physical cartridges in North America from 1985-1996.

This list includes: Everything that we commonly accept as "official" NES games. Also, unlicensed games that were still sold in stores, like Tengen black cartridges, Camerica gold cartridges, and Wisdom Tree games.

This list does NOT include: Games that were sold in other regions but not in the United States or Canada. I'm keeping a separate list for those. Also, games that were cancelled and not sold in stores before Y2K. Some of them have had official releases in more recent years and most of them had their ROMs leaked to the internet, but they are kept on the other list. Homebrew and aftermarket games are not included. Anything that was sold on or after January 1, 2000 is not included.

These are games that are not on VGMaps at all. The incomplete map sets on the VGMaps index are not included, mostly because I haven't played every NES game in existence and can't tell at a glance whether most of these are complete or not.

The international list of unmapped NES games!

This list includes... Games that were sold as physical cartridges outside of North America before Y2K. Yes most of these are from Japan, but this list is also for games that were released in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Brazil.

This list does NOT include... Anything sold after Y2K. Aftermarket and homebrew. Digital games with no physical version. IMO, even though we have these on VGMaps, they should not count towards completion of the NES index.

Also ROM hacks, as this would go way beyond the scope of what VGMaps is here for. Also cancelled games that never had their ROMS leaked to the internet, because it's impossible to map games that don't exist.

707 games left...

I've actually fully mapped Ufouria: The Saga in 2006 so you can remove that one from the list.

Mega Man: Powered Up (PSP)

Interesting, I've never heard of anyone refer to "Star Voyager" as "Acclaim's Star Voyager".

As a rule, I generally remove/ignore creators' names, like "Disney's".  I also remove "Hudson's" from "Hudson's Adventure Island".  I keep waffling on "Bram Stoker's Dracula", because the film that these games are based on heavily emphasized "Bram Stoker's" as if it should be part of the title, and I can't count on IMDb for clarification, it's been listed both with and without the "Bram Stoker's" at different times that I've looked at it.  On VGMaps, these games are currently under "B", but I might move them to "D" one day to be consistent with my rules.

But obviously, with any rule, there are challenges and exceptions.  You can't very well take away "Tecmo" from "Tecmo Bowl", but that makes "Tecmo Secret Of The Stars" on the Super NES problematic. You do have to call it "Tecmo Baseball" since Nintendo released their own "Baseball", but also, no one calls it "Tecmo Star Force", and that's fine as there isn't another "Star Force" game by someone else, but the "Tecmo" is indeed bigger on the Star Force box than the (Tecmo) Baseball box.  Does size matter?  Well, while I do think that "Capcom's Gold Medal Challenge" should be listed under "G", and I similarly ignore the "Capcom's" on "Capcom's MVP Football" on the Super NES and list it under "M", the latter looks really odd especially because "Capcom's" is so large on the box art.

I generally keep the name if it's a sports athlete/coach that endorses it, like "Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball" (Super NES).  Sometimes you have to ignore it if it's a one-off and they don't endorse the whole series, like "Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II" (Genesis) or "Ryne Sandberg Plays Bases Loaded 3".  This definitely runs into problems like "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" which feels like it should be under "M" (which is where it is here on VGMaps as of now) but by my rules, you'd think I should put under "P", as the series existed before Mike Tyson and has continued on without him.  But if I keep it at "M", does that mean "Ryne Sandberg Plays Bases Loaded 3" should be under "R"?  But since he PLAYS the game, then I guess the game really is titled "Bases Loaded 3", and we should just see "Ryne Sandberg Plays" as tagline text, like how "Tuff E Nuff" on the Super NES isn't called "Hey Punk! Are You Tuff E Nuff?", despite the box very clearly saying that...

Back to the sports thing, there's a Super NES PAL exclusive game called "Dino Dini's Soccer".  If Dino Dini was a sports guy, that would be under "D".  But I learned that he's a programmer, making it under "S" - like "Soccer, Dino Dini's".  It's like "David Crane's Amazing Tennis" on the Super NES.  David Crane developed it, like he did "David Crane's A Boy And His Blob: Trouble On Blobolonia", which I put under "B", not "D", despite the "B" in "Boy" so far from the front, similar to "J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings: Vol. 1" on the Super NES being listed under "L" for "Lord" which is almost in the middle!

And then I prefer APA alphabetization, which puts "Superman" before "Super Mario Bros." - since "N" comes before "R" - whereas "normal"/"typical" alphabetization (which doesn't seem intuitive to me) considers spaces as something to be alphabetized, rather than moving on to the next letter, and therefore puts "Super Mario Bros." BEFORE "Superman".  APA alphabetization helps with being consistent when you're not sure if there's a space or not, like "Sub Terrania/SubTerrania/Subterrania" on the Genesis, if there were other "Sub-" games listed around them.  A better example is that I'm pretty confident that "StarTropics" is one word - though the sequel's box has it as two - and it seems silly to me that its position among other games that begin with "Star" (eg. "Star Trek") would depend on whether it is one or two.

I was thinking of putting my alphabetization woes into a YouTube video, if I wasn't behind on other video projects that I feel more obligated to do.  But after reading about the NES and Super NES game libraries so often, and auditing ROMs/box art/maps, I've definitely seen all sorts of alphabetization choices and wrestled with my own, that it COULD be an interesting video, despite that (or maybe because) many people probably don't think that hard about it.

@TerraEsperZ I've removed Ufouria from the list. Don't know how I missed that. Hopefully this list is accurate now.

@JonLeung I'm starting to see what you mean. I use GameFAQs as the main authority on release dates, developers, and titles, but I must admit their system is confusing when you have a large number of games to organize.

I especially dislike how Bases Loaded II is the only game in the series that uses roman numerals. Now we have to choose between proper alphabetical order and game order.

I especially dislike how Bases Loaded II is the only game in the series that uses roman numerals. Now we have to choose between proper alphabetical order and game order.

When there are numbers, even when they switch between Arabic and Roman numerals (or even fully written out!), we should consider the value of the numbers in alphabetization - or rather, numeration.  Basically, common sense.  For example, on the Super NES, you certainly wouldn't go "Mortal Kombat 3" before "Mortal Kombat II" based on the "I" coming after "3", that'd be ridiculous.  Implied "1"s (or "I"s) should factor in.  For example, again on the Super NES, "Bubsy In Close Encounters Of The Furred Kind" shouldn't be after "Bubsy II", even though "II", if it was a word with two "I"s, would normally come before "In", because we have to assume a "1" for the first Bubsy, and then count the "II" as a "2".  Numbers take precedence over chronology, which is why I wouldn't call it "chronological order", after all, Castlevania III and Dragon Warrior III take place before the first game, and I THINK Ninja Gaiden III actually takes place before the second (it's more clear in the Japanese version, apparently).

Implied numbers can help keep series listed together.  For a specific NES example, the Ultima games shouldn't get split up by the "Ultimate" games.  Coincidentally, "Ultima: Exodus", "Ultima: Quest Of The Avatar", and "Ultima: Warriors Of Destiny" are actually known more commonly as "Ultima III: Exodus", "Ultima IV: Quest Of The Avatar", and "Ultima V: Warriors Of Destiny", but are listed in the correct order naturally even without the numbers.  But, there are also two NES games that begin with "Ultimate", and though I prefer APA-style alphabetization, it does bring up one oddity, and what you get is this:

ULTIMAEXODUS
ULTIMAQUESTOFTHEAVATAR
ULTIMATEAIRCOMBAT
ULTIMATEBASKETBALL

ULTIMAWARRIORSOFDESTINY

See how "Ultima: Warriors Of Destiny" now comes after "Ultima: TeAir Combat" and "Ultima: TeBasketball"?

I still do love APA alphabetization, but we have to deal with this.  The use of implied numbers actually fixes this:

ULTIMA3EXODUS
ULTIMA4QUESTOFTHEAVATAR
ULTIMA5WARRIORSOFDESTINY
ULTIMATEAIRCOMBAT
ULTIMATEBASKETBALL

I'm using Arabic numbers here, because if using Roman numerals and treating them as letters, it actually ends up the same as before:

ULTIMAIIIEXODUS
ULTIMAIVQUESTOFTHEAVATAR
ULTIMATEAIRCOMBAT
ULTIMATEBASKETBALL

ULTIMAVWARRIORSOFDESTINY

ULTIMAtely, I think it comes down to common sense, though, like I said, I've thought a lot about this more than most people world.  I could go on all day.  Do you want me to go on about the five Donkey Kong games on the NES and how I think they should be ordered?

I actually took the screenshots for those earlier today. I'll just send those in now and find out naturally. :p

I actually took the screenshots for those earlier today. I'll just send those in now and find out naturally. :p

So, I think the proper order should be:

Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Donkey Kong Classics
Donkey Kong Jr. Math
Donkey Kong 3

This looks weird, and maybe unintuitive at first glance, but there is logic to this.
Obviously, Donkey Kong is the first.  Donkey Kong Jr. is the second game.  (Only those that follow strict alphabetization to insert Donkey Kong 3 between here would dispute that.)
Because Donkey Kong Classics includes the first two games, I choose to put that next, before the spin-off of Donkey Kong Jr. Math.  This is even despite the fact that Donkey Kong Classic comes out years after Donkey Kong Jr. Math.
Then Donkey Kong 3, to finish it off.

In one outdated folder where I have .JPG images of every NES box art, I have had to name them these weird names to keep them in order:

DonkeyKong1.jpg
DonkeyKong2Jr.jpg
DonkeyKong2KClassics.jpg
DonkeyKong2LJrMath.jpg
DonkeyKong3.jpg

I don't like saying "1" for the first game in a series if it doesn't actually have it (which is almost always).  I just say "the original" or "the first", or make it clear which one I'm referring to.  For example, "Mortal Kombat" could be confused with the newer "Mortal Kombat 1".  That's a specific case, but I still like to be accurate, like how I make sure I use Roman or Arabic numerals when possible (Mega Man using both for 2-7 (or II-VII), depending on if you're talking about box art or in-game titles, makes this annoying).  But when it comes to keeping files in order, often I may be forced to insert those "1"s and convert any Roman numerals to Arabic.

Here on VGMaps.com, I originally had the bootleg game "Donkey Kong Country 4" listed before "Donkey Kong Jr.", due to strict alphabetization.  But when I added zagato's Donkey Kong Jr. Math and Donkey Kong 3 maps, I reevaluated that and decided to move Donkey Kong Country 4 to after Donkey Kong 3.  It's well understood that the Donkey Kong Country games debuted on the Super NES, mostly set apart from the original arcade/NES games.  Though this Donkey Kong Country 4 is a bootleg, it is also clearly a later product, and I'm not a fan of unlicensed bootleg games being inside a cluster of officially licensed games.

I still hold licensed games at a higher regard than unlicensed games, and I've questioned if I should deal with them differently, especially when they share the name with other well-known games.  I'm not sure how.  Change the table colour?  Put them on another page?  I don't know.  Tetris - Tengen vs. Nintendo - both on the NES - is one thing.  But I don't like how if you search on the Directory page here for "Super Mario World", the first result is the NES/Famicom bootleg version, rather than the Super NES version.

We actually already have Kabuki: Quantum Fighter mapped, by Will Mallia.

Scanning your list, I'm surprised we don't have maps for Crash 'N The Boys: Street Challenge and Wurm: Journey To The Center Of The Earth.  Guess I'll have to add them to my personal requests list.

Also, Rainbow Islands is a weird situation too.  The North American and PAL region games are actually different.  We have neither, so both of them should be on your list.  Going by box names, the North American one is "Rainbow Islands" and the PAL one is "Rainbow Islands: Bubble Bobble 2", but both in-game titles are "Rainbow Islands: The Story Of Bubble Bobble 2".

I made the changes. I also took Ultimate Frogger Champion off the list because it was made in 2009.

I'll have to check out Rainbow Islands. I never knew that it was completely remade for the PAL version.
