Homestuck

We had a thread a year ago about MSPaint Adventures' previous main comic, Problem Sleuth, but I figured a new thread was warranted.

Has anyone been following it? I know I'm going to sound like a giggling fanboy, but I've been loving every single update of it!!! It is easily my favourite webcomic (of sorts) of all time. The fact that it's also based on old adventure games like Problem Sleuth was is a nice bonus, but the author has been slowly getting away from that and it's not entirely a bad thing. It has become more cinematic as a result, and the various animations with music have been, for the most part, getting better and more epic as time goes by.

Heck, I've bought every soundtrack album they've released for it (8 so far!) and the only thing I'm not happy with is the fact that aside from the flash animations, there's no real way to view it offline.


In any case, I started this thread because a new flash animation has been released today about Jade, the fourth kid's entry into the medium and things are getting even more epic that I expected. Let's just say that 'Jackspers Noirlecrow' just got his final prototyping and we finally get a good glimpse of what or who destroyed the Trolls' version of Derse and Prospit...

Now, let's all talk about how this comic rocks

I know it's been almost a year since *nobody* even commented on this, but I though it was worth mentioning that a new milestone had been reached with the Flash animation for the End of Act 5, a 13 minutes behemoth that's 53 MBs in total that was released yesterday and managed to crash Newgrounds almost instantly upon release!

In any case, it's not recommended to watch it unless you've been following the comic religiously or else you'll be completely lost. Needless to say, Andrew Hussie (the author) managed to up the ante even more while *still* introducing more questions than ever before. And that's a good thing!

Funny, the animation was the reason I never got into this comic.  I stopped going to newgrounds years ago since most of the animations are in the short story format and that just wasn't enough for me.  I've got a library of web comics though.  Been having trouble finding good new ones to add lately.

t's funny because it's the animations and the music contained in them that helped fuel my (near) fanaticism for the comic. Most of the early flashes are pointless mini games that are meant to emulate the various styles of games that Homestuck tends to parody or give homage to and thus they're not that interesting.

But once the longer animations started coming out less frequently but where they dealt with bigger events where a lot of stuff happens at once with killer music, I was hooked for life. The comic got more cinematic as a result and concentrated on bigger events at the expense of the minute actions of the protagonists.

I gets overly complex quick quickly though and sometimes I wish I had the time to go back and read it again from the start but there are so many comics to read that I don't know how many hours/days/weeks(?) that would take me.

I'm curious to know what exactly it is about the animations that turned you off of it.

Nothing about it turned me off, I was just looking for comics not movies.

Ah, I get it now. Even though the animations are rare and special events, I have to admit that Homestuck is not exactly a comic in the strictest definition of the word. It's more like a series of narrated pictures (specifically a call back to the old graphic adventures with a text sparser), plus lots and lots of chat logs, interactive minigames and the animations, plus a related site with Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff AND the various soundtracks released so far if you want to count them. It's really a multimedia experience and in a way I'm kinda sad about that since it means it will never exist as a comic book in a satisfying way. I know the author is working on compiling it into a book like he started doing with Problem Sleuth but I feel that all those extra details (music, animation, interactivity) that will be missing will greatly hurt it. And that sucks since I like to encourage webcomic artist by buying their books when I like their stuff, like the Girl Genius series for example.

I've been thinking about getting the Accursed Dragon book.  Or maybe Zebra Girl.
